Stuart Spector based his decision to become an instrument maker on a simple financial reality. “I felt I could build something I couldn’t afford to purchase.” “ There were no bass pickups available,” Stuart recalls, “So I made a primitive one using a sewing machine motor to wind the wire.” Within a few years Stuart was selling his basses and went into business as Spector Guitars. His first employee was a talented Luthier named Vinnie Fodera (now making Fodera basses.)
In 1976 a furniture designer, Ned Steinberger, joined forces with the team at Spector Guitars. “He became fascinated with the idea that we were nutty enough to make musical instruments.” Ned designed the NS carved body design that Spector is still making to this day. Introduced in 1977, the NS quickly became a favorite of pros. Spector was offered many different versions over the years, but all feature a crisp, focused sound and comfortable curved body.
Ned Steinberger went on to create the headless bass and electric double bass and many interesting instruments, but Stuart Spector has continued through the years to perfect that first design that revolutionzed the bass world. A design many companies have tried to copy.
When you play a Spector bass you can feel the 30 years of artistry and innovation that went into them. Spector now has 4 factories around the world.
